Web Response Time

The number of seconds that it takes from the time you click on a button or hyperlink until the page is returned back to you can vary widely. The page gets processed on the web server, is transmitted on the internet to your local ISP, is downloaded to your computer (normally through a dialup connection) and is then displayed by your browser. A number of factors can affect the time. These includes (in no particular order):

bulletThe first request for a page on the web server will take longer than subsequent pages. The first page initializes your session on the web server and requires some additional processing.
bulletThe size of the page (most pages are designed to take a few seconds on a normal dialup connection).
bulletThe amount of graphics on the page (graphics tend to be larger and thus slower to retrieve). Very large detailed photographs can take on the order of 30 seconds or longer to view.
bulletThe amount of processing that has to be done to build the page. Pages that do searches tend to add a few seconds of processing time. More complex searches can take longer.
bulletThe load on the web server. The web depends upon the fact that everyone does not retrieve something at the same time. Based on the number of simultaneous requests and the complexity of the request this time can vary.
bulletThe speed of your connection to the internet.
bulletThe quality of your phone line. Even though you might have a 56kb modem the actual speed of the modem will usually not be that large. The speed can vary with the weather conditions and time of day. 56kb modem speed can also be slower if your connection is physically farther away from the telephone company office.
bulletThe load on the internet. This is one of the most widely variable factors. Internet traffic also varies with the time of the day (early evening has been seen to be one of the most widely used time, when everyone gets home from work). Once you have connected to your ISP (via dialup for example), the connection from your ISP to the web server can take many routes. Based upon the load on each leg of the route, the response time can vary. This is very analogous to the bottlenecks on the roads that carry cars into and out of cities and towns. Everyone wants to use the roads at the same time of the day.

Web Site Requirements (Browsers)

Monitor Resolution: This site is best viewed with a monitor resolution of 600x800, but all pages should be fully functional an lower resolutions.

Browsers: The site is best viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5. The site has been tested in different versions of both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator/Communicator and it has also been tested in Web-TV. There may be certain features that will not view correctly in older versions of some browsers. If you find any page that gives you an error or does not seem correct, please use the Feedback form to notify us of the problem and we will attempt to fix the incompatibility.

Cookies: There are two types of cookies: Some are written to your hard drive while others are only TEMPORARY cookies and are NEVER written to your hard drive.

e-Interchange uses a cookie that is written to your hard drive if you want to not have to reenter your password each time you go to the site. This is selected if you check the Remember Password box on the login screen. It is completely optional. If you don't check the box then a cookie is not written to your hard drive.

e-Interchange also uses a different type of cookie when you login to the site. This cookie is a "per-session" or "memory" cookie and is NEVER written to your hard drive. It is kept by the browser in memory only as long as you keep your browser open. When you close your browser then the cookie disappears.

Cookies are relatively safe. They do not allow anyone to read or write anything that is on your system that is not in the cookie file. A cookie that is written by a web site can then only be read by that same web site. The number of cookies that are stored on your system as well as the size of each cookie are limited.

Depending upon your browser there are different commands that allow you to only enable the "memory" cookies at the same time that the hard drive cookies are disabled. This would allow you to use the site without having any cookies written to your system.
